I purchased the entire Season 37 (2018) off of Amazon Prime, but after only a few episodes I became so disappointed in the terrible acting and the horrible scripts that I quit watching. My disaffection had little to do with the Doctor regenerating into a woman – even though that poorly thought out idea seems to violate any number of genetic impracticalities – but the show had simply become unentertaining. The whole conception and execution thereof was simply dumb.
Perhaps in consideration of all the Dr. Who T-shirts I’ve bought, and all the various Dr. Who memorabilia, models, and book-ends purchased, I broke down and watched the 2018 Christmas special … oh, no! … they couldn’t even get that right … the 2018 New Years special … and was once again so disappointed that I now compose this diatribe. The beginning premise of the episode was promising: warring factions had stopped fighting each other to face a common foe . There you go! Good Dr. Who episode idea worthy of fleshing out. But no, even though the entire planet is under threat, let us work out Daddy issues. What? In the real world, and in scripts which attempt to curry believability as an element of good story-telling as faithful art, such issues would have been immediately dismissed by all involved due to the obvious unimportance when planetary survival is at stake. Come on people! Even worse, Graham pukes out some drivel where we are supposed to swallow he is an esteemed psychoanalyst. Whatever! Horrible. In the past, no matter how lame any previous Doctor or episode might have been, there was always this element of logic that hung the whole thing together. This is gone.
The BBC needs to sack everyone involved in this travesty. Chris Chibnall should be expelled from the UK, exiled to some backwater where he is continually beaten by outraged townsfolk for his lack of literary imagination. He is an embarrassment not only to Dr. Who, but to art itself. The only way the BBC is going to be able to salvage this mess (and I pray they do), is to bring back Peter Capaldi, have him awake from a bad dream wherein he had regenerated into Jodie Whitaker. “Ha, ha, it was all a bad dream.” And then kill him off and regenerate the show into something worthwhile watching. If you want to make it a woman, fine. But make whomever into something that respects the underlying premise of Dr. Who: an alien, very wise, very old, who has been through a lot. Get back to basics like good script writing, good acting, good Doctor Who!
