Very good RTS but has its flaws. I really like this game and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a RTS. I’ve been the real time strategy genre since the 90s with games like Command & Conquer and then Red Alert and more recently games like World in Conflict and then the War Game series, amongst others.
There are a few minor flaws. Sometimes the pathing isn’t great. I’ve had squads split and half go one way the others go the other way (into a machine gun nest). The build tree is limited compared to other games too.
That being said, it has pleasant graphics (bear in mind it came out 2 years ago) and the art style is great too. The characters are deeper than your typical RTS heroes and it has a richer story too. I think it’d make a great series if Amazon is looking for ideas post Lord of the Rings, Reacher, Jack Ryan etc.
The main story mode is more challenging than other games in the RTS genre as there is a unit cap and as Polonia you’re not starting from a position of strength in missions. Typically guide your units through avoid casualties and then develop a base somewhere, before driving out the enemy or protect trains and civilians etc. You get the idea. What could be a very repetitive game keeps you on your toes and there is a nice progression as it moves forward. As I said the story is richer than other similar games and you do feel part of this diesel punk 1920s world. It’s really this attention to narrative that keeps the game going and missions logically link together.
It does of course have a multiplayer and co-op mode if that’s your thing then you can fight it out with some friends, mechs and bears.
The DLC expands the conflict from the base game to other theatres and there are of course new units to enjoy, like new airships and new hero characters.
If you’re looking for an old fashioned style RTS that’s well crafted you won’t be disappointed.
