I hated so many things about this movie I donโt even know where to start. I am not a believer, or spiritual person. I do find meaning in some belief based things, just not all.
Father takes his children on a trip and leaves the wife at home. Seems weird to do a family trip and leave your whole wife behind. But okay, kind of a plot hole to me.
Grown adults call god โpapaโ like thatโs a bit unsettling to meโฆ but Iโm not gonna kink shame.
Then they stop to see a waterfall on the way there, and the father proceeds to tell his little girl maybe 7 or 8 years old a grim folklore tale about a princess who committed suicide. Donโt know if thatโs how I would want to set the tone for my family vacation but you do you.
They get to the camp site, and tragedy strikes when his little girl goes missing during a canoeing fail, they later reveal an opportunistic PEDO SERIAL KILLER IS ON THE LOOSE! Maybe do ur research and donโt camp thereโฆ or idk post some signs warning citizens.
Anyhow, the loss of their daughter basically blows his life up, tears the family apart, nobody knows how to go on living. I mean who would in this scenario?
The man goes on a quest to find his daughter, or get vengeance.. Iโm not entirely sure which, in this creepy shack where the murderer dragged her. Her blood stains still everywhere. Why it wasnโt demolished or at the very least cleaned up I couldnโt tell you either.
He begins to hallucinate god, Jesus, the Holy Spirit which are personified as these sickeningly optimistic mystical types who all speak in riddles, and avoid giving actual answer/reason for anything. Faith this, faith that. They drag him on this weird journey where they donโt explain anything & provoke his anger & sadness. The man has been through enough! Stop toying with him like a bug in a jar. They show him his daughter & say you canโt see her or speak to her though! Lovely.
I almost forgot to mention the childhood abuse flashbacks of his Christian father who couldnโt cope with life beating him and his mother up. They reunited them & the father said he was sorry. I guess that makes everything better.
There was no semblance of reality to this movie. The poor child never got justice! Ever! I thought maybe โgodโ would lead him to her body, or eventually help him find her alive. NOPE. Just blood stains, and inspirational quotes about hope and forgiveness! How about we donโt do that, and we focus on the criminal justice system, mental health care, and tangible solutions.
The underlying message was humans arenโt allowed to judge one another, and to forgive everything.
If we actually were to do that. There would be complete chaos. Everybody would do whatever they want cause you canโt judge them, and you have to allow them to continue hurting you cause forgiveness! What a ridiculous notion.
Also my favorite part was when god made Mackenzie get hit by a semi truck so they could have a conversation, but couldnโt hit the pedophile with a bolt of lightening, or make them mess up where they leave clues & get caught? Nothing? Almost maybes it seem like evil will always prevail, but pick my side! Lol.
