Haven't read any Hiscock books but did watch a DVD version of Beyond the West Horizon and found it really interesting. Eric's narrative was very formally pronounced in BBC English of the day. We picked it as a voyage of about 1960 as the Auckland Harbour Bridge, opened in 1959 appeared without the extra clip-on lanes added about 1963 and eitho Westhaven Marina. We sail a 10 metre yacht so were interested in detail, which was all there in pre-GPS navigation days. The state of life in Polynesia and Torres Strait islands was a reminder of how much the countries and people have developed economically and culturally since that time. It really was a brave undertaking for its time, though such cruising in small yachts has become quite common today. The filming on board and of Pacific scenery was very well done in a pre-digital age.
