I was given a copy of this book published in 1942; it is a slim, informative, charming introduction to the great English novelists, from Henry Fielding to Virginia Woolf. Elizabeth Bowen -- herself an accomplished novelist -- is able to convey the essence of each author in a short space. The colour plates and illustrations add to the charm of the book.
