The first time i saw this movie was at home with my three kids, and my longtime boyfriend. My kids were young, 6, 7, 11. I think that because he was there with us, the kids werent too scared the first time we saw it. I was amazed at how different of a movie it was but i loved it. My kids loved it. Of course seeing any movie only once and missing parts here and there, you might not quite get it until youve watched it a second or third time. I really think it depends on the child on wether or not they are horrified by it, or simply love it. By now, 2019, my kids and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. We've watched it so many times, that we could say every line along with the characters. The only part that makes me cringe is the silliness during the prayer at dinnertime with the "other" parents but other than that, the movie is great. I'm 37 and love love love animated movies and anything Halloween related or Tim Burton related is the absolute BEST. I love Corpse Bride, Nightmare Befpre Christmas, Paranorman, Hotel Transylvania, Monster House, all of those like that. At first i thought the almost nude scene was a bit inappropriate for my kid's ages, but then after watching a few times, we thought it was really funny. The movie IS a very much different kind of movie but that's why we love it. I refer to it as a kid friendly horror movie. So, my family gives it a 10 thumbs up!!!
