Really not a fan of this adaptation. Wife an I grew up on the story of Peter Pan & Wendy an this just didn’t feel like their story. So here’s a few issues I had with it.
1) Tinker Bell - the actress they picked I felt could have been a really good tinker bell, I don’t care about the race thing, it’s a fictional story, who cares. The issue I had was in all the other adaptations an from the book Tink was always sassy, attention needy & absolutely disliked Wendy. She didn’t want another woman in Peter’s life. She also didn’t give out her pixie dust to anyone that asked, you had to earn it from tink, it was part of her trust an her personality.
2) Peter Pan - He was lifeless, not funny, an rarely smiled. The original Peter was childish, full of life, prankster/jokester. Peter in the 2023 version just seemed like he was forcing his childishness an was growing bored of neverland.
3) Lost Boys - in this film it was more girls than boys, fine whatever, but at least change the groups name considering it’s not made up of boys. Also didn’t like the creepy castle they lived it, it didn’t seem all whimsical & something a child would use for a fort like their old treehouse set up.
4) Tiger Lily - Not a lot of bad things to say about her, I like that they casted a true Native American for the role & used her native language to speak. She seemed a lot more independent & gave that strong woman vibe, she wasn’t reliant on Peter nor was she hardcore crushing on him. I wish they explained her character a little more, she definitely seemed older than the lost boys an was seen briefly in her camp sewing with the elders, so is she grown up? Not sure. Also she referred to peters shadow as “little brother” so does she see him more as a sibling or did her tribe take him in a raise him like her sibling. But she seemed to be more of a cleanup person, like she was only there to clean up any mess Peter made an didn’t have any real story to her other than that. Which was a shame.
5) The setting - everything just seemed dark & gloomy, almost like a Tim Burton film an it was very lackluster. Wasn’t a fan of the crocodile, in the past the crocodile had a little personality to him & had this comical determination to get hook, this version felt like something out of Jurassic park & he was just there to eat whoever he can, they also didn’t talk about the clocks an hooks fear of them.
6) The Story - overall story wasn’t anything to write home about, you could tell they tried to add their own twist to it. I did like that they added some more backstory to Hook & Peter but I felt like they didn’t explain it very well. They were friends but then what, nothing. The original movie was a coming of age story for Wendy & Peter an throughout the movie they developed a strong friendship, where as in this movie they spent more time arguing an developed a friendship within the last 2 mins of the movie.
Overall the movie was just meh to me, it was slow paced, dry, the cgi was rough an the kids lacked enthusiasm, emotion & the will to be adventurers. Unfortunately my kids lost interest in it halfway through an wanted to watch the cartoon version. Glad it’s on Disney plus because it’s not a movie I would have paid to see in theaters. This is just my honest neutral review with all politics aside. Hope this helps for anyone on the fence or curious.
