I would rate this a 3 1/2 stars if I could (so far, I have only watched the first 3 episodes), but I would say it is definitely closer to a 4 star review than a 3.
Casting:
- While I would have preferred a black haired Percy, I feel that Walker captured his essence perfectly. He is the Percy I have always imagined down to the smallest detail, and his hair colour is now entirely irrelevant because of how well he played the role.
- I would also have preferred a blonde haired Annabeth, even if not white I think Leah might have had blonde braids. However, if Leah had captured the essence of Annabeth in the same way that Walker had captured the essence of Percy, I would again have no issues with her appearance, as I feel it is so much more about the character themselves than what they look like. But because, from the first three episodes, I got no sense of Annabeth at all, I feel that Leah was entirely the wrong casting choice, as she neither looks like any person’s imagination of Annabeth or, I feel, acts like her at all (I’m really not trying to hate on her, she’s a lovely girl)
- Grover was cast perfectly for me, he basically walked right out of the book from his appearance to his acting, although I don’t feel he is the best actor, for some reason this adds to Grover’s character?
- Clarisse, Chiron, Mr D (perfectttt), Sally Jackson and Medusa were, to me, perfectly cast and I have no complaints at all
- I don’t have much of an issue with Luke, but he really doesn’t look like my imagination of Luke and he only captures Luke’s essence to a certain extent
Pros:
- The camp is beautifully, perfectly done and it made me feel so reminiscent, amazing set and amazing feeling to it (the cabins were so perfect)
- I love that the characters were the right age, this is the most important thing for me
Cons (these are all quite small):
- Gabe should be much much more abusive and unsavoury, I really didn’t like how normal they made him as it adds to Percy and Sally’s backstories so much and make his death much more justifiable
- Storyline with Percy getting his sword and fighting Luke is SO important, I can’t believe they cut it out, not great on their part
- Scene with Miss Dodds was inaccurate but I honestly don’t think this was that big a deal. Same with the scene where Percy prays to his mother for some reason, weird but doesn’t really matter
- The third episode was slow and I felt the vibes were off, the first two were much better
- The bus scene had not nearly enough action, it was not done well at all
Altogether though I’m happy the show is being produced, it’s much better than the movies and makes little Percy-Jackson-obsessed childhood me so happy! Can’t wait for the rest of the episodes and seasons hopefully.
