I LOVE GENE WILDER! He did a FANTASTIC JOB! Johnny Depp can't even come close to Gene Wilder. What they did in the movie that Gene Wilder made a huge success was all about his talent and skills as an actor. The movie doesn't have to be text book cover to cover the same as the written story, that's the point of taking a written copy of something and bringing it to life from a different eye's point of view on screen through human performance. Gene Wlider did a great job making that character and story his own, he made it so that we only believe he was the one made to be this character til time indefinite. The new technology in the movie Johnny Depp did was so different then the film industry back in the early 70's...and I didn't like all the colors and flashiness and new age hype and tech. And I really didn't care for Johnny Depps acting and portrayal of the character! I'm quite happy I didn't have to pay to watch it in the theater I would have been extremely upset! But the one thing they did right was wait till the original actor from the original movie had passed away, how of respect for the size and success of another large actor's career it is only right to not re-make a film until the first one has passed away, so I am pleased that Johnny Depp had a good sense of quality in that way...because Hollywood has made that tragic mistake and re-make stuff when lead actors of original material is still around and that's just tacky and bad taste! Anyway people can watch both and argue over what they prefer from until time indefinite... because they did at least manage to make sure both versions were extremely different for each of the actors who are great actors and wonderful lead performer's in everything they've ever made. So there is that level of equality and respect to the whole thing too! :-) I'm going to go watch a Gene Wilder movie now, because this just put me in the mood for one of his films! It's the one way he will forever live on for great fans like me!
