This book is beautifully written. Tan effortlessly evokes Malaysia of the colonial era. He is not preachy or judgmental but allows the reader to form his own opinions. The introduction of Sun Yat Sen anchors the book in a particular historical time frame, making it more believable. Willie seems so real, one can imagine how the author wheedled confessions out of his hosts to provide for his stories of human frailty.
