I normally like a police procedural, but this one just doesn't deliver. Turgid, and over-acted in places, with the Maori and Irish leads chewing the scenery in some scenes and wooden in others. Like they weren't given any direction. Music is a bit durge-like, but the main problem seems to be the script which demands too much suspension of disbelief, while not really being that compelling. Very rare that I give up on a series before the end of the first episode. I did with The Gone. "Top of the Lake" it's not. The 2 stars are for the gorgeous scenery around the Kaimai ranges.

NO SPOILERS *** Yes, it's a bit dated now, but this still rates as one of my favourite Clarke novels. It's poignant and thought-provoking in a way that few Sci-Fi stories are. It still gives me the same spine tingles as starring up into the limitless night sky when I was just a child. I love the fact that nothing is exactly what it seems, and the twist will have you pondering our place in the universe. This is Arthur C Clarke at the top of his game.
