A brilliant film, drawing attention to rural poverty, the disenfranchised and the vulnerability of those unable to defend themselves against exploitation and cruelty. It is set in 1977, not so long ago but it would be wrong to imagine that these conditions belong to the past, for they are very much present.

Quite tedious about a world I am thankfully not familiar with. It does perk up somewhat, however, about halfway through when he gives the suffocatingly needy Esther a piece of his mind.
