You have to be blunt when someone you love disappoints you, so one star it is. This is an okay movie in itself but a mediocre one by Pixar’s standards. A weak and confused storyline, characters that you’re not given the opportunity to get attached to and more tragically, zero magic; no smile on your face, no tear in your eye. Where are the feelings of joy, sadness, compassion, fear… love that you experience when watching any of the Pixar masterpieces? Even “Cars” are more heart than “Turning Red”.
There is hope, though, since it’s not like Pixar haven’t been capable of greatness in recent times. “Soul” is easily one of my all time favorites (it always helps when Jaime Foxx is involved in some way) and Luca was just super touching and visually beautiful. Unfortunately for “Turning Red”, even the geniuses at Pixar can’t hit the mark every single time. Having said all of this, we admire you still - and forever - and will just have to patiently wait for your next release.
