The film is magnificent. The pacing was perfect, not too slow, never rushed. The cast is wonderful. But first and foremost is Colson Whitehead’s story. Of many films we have seen on slavery, this is the most important. It creates enormous empathy for the African-Americans who suffered incredible cruelty. It is also cinematically beautiful which adds to its power. The central question of the film is delusion: the delusions of the oppressors and the delusions of the oppressed. The film is teased us into thinking about what is possible and what is humane.
