I love Elizabeth George's novels, so I'm rather disappointed by the drama series. I think the relationships between the novel's characters (which were preserved in the pilot) are an important part of the stories. Without them, it's just another crime-solving series. Also, the difference between the upper class Lynley and rough around the edges Havers isn't clear enough either. Sharon Small is much too good looking for the part! Havers is scruffy and dumpy and wears awful clothes. She has to be pushed into improving her look, and her only good features are her eyes. Her friendship with her new neighbours is important too and only appears briefly in a couple of episodes. In my opinion, the screenwriters have pared back the stories too much and lost plenty in translation.
