*i edited my review to 2 stars because "death rewind" is super glitchy. tried everything to bypass the glitch but was unable to use my second death rewind to save a character. what is the point in buying the $80 deluxe edition if i have to play through those hours of boring dialogue a third time just to save a dude? also, the same action that saved [SPOILER] in my first playthrough killed them in the second playthrough. ? i did nothing differently, but the person died anyway.*
eh. after playing this through twice, hoping that i just got an unfortunately unfinished ending the first time, i can say that it leaves a lot to be desired.
what everyone else said regarding the hair graphics, water, etc, is true. the characters' uncanny valley mouths during certain cutscenes are laughable (like really, you'll laugh) and while i'm entertained, that takes away from the horror aspect.
i played this through another time because i was so underwhelmed by the ending the first time around.
i don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say -- i sympathized with the tarot lady the first time around, and i got the exact same ending as when i didn't do what she wanted me to do. the same cutscene was used whether you do what she wants you to do or not. and she's angry, saying you didn't do what she wanted you to do, saying she'll curse you forever for what you did ... whether you do what she wants or not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i think people are a little too hard on the actors in this game -- i thought kaityln and dylan were cool -- but uh, emma, jacob, ryan. they're all hard to play and even harder to empathize with. i'm a monotone, often-unenthused person 😂 so i was rooting for ryan. but when he said "uh, you're doing all this, FOR A BOY???" to laura, he lost me. nah man, she's doing it because she wants to prevent this BS from happening again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
the ending left me stunned. i was ready for a final showdown... nah. i know you can unlock a "secret ending", and i can't speak to that. it may be amazing. but most of these endings, from what i can tell, are abrupt and leave everything to be desired. no character follow-up, no resolution.
all that said, it was entertaining? i guess? i wish we could skip through all of the cutscenes and inconsequential dialogue should we choose to replay. i honestly had a book in hand and would read any time there was dialogue the second time around. even when i chose different responses, the result was almost always the same.
i liked the jump scares, and it was fun enough to play through twice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i do recommend buying it when it's on sale, like others have said.
