Here's an actual genuine review of this film! I had fun watching this movie! It was not as bad as so many haters are saying. I really don't understand why there's so much hatred for this remake. Of course it wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it way more than the original!
I grew up loving the book as a kid and I always thought it was more whimsical than scary. The original movie is scary and disturbing -- easily would give a young kid nightmares. I watched the original a week ago and I really didn't enjoy it, aside from the original actress of the Grand High Witch. The original has clunky writing, drags on too long, is quite visually gross, and is just confusing plot-wise. This new movie had the right amount of spooky witchiness without it being gross. It was more whimsical like the book is. The writing is much more concise and the production is colorful, bright, and fun to look at.
Some complain about the witch wigs or the inaccuracies of Hathaway's accent, but I enjoyed it because it adds to the campiness of the witches trying disguise themselves. They aren't even human, so I don't expect them to look and act that way. Some others dislike Chris Rock's narration, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. He added an interesting opening to the movie and he's not even in the film for that long. He speaks in the beginning and briefly again at the end. He's not constantly talking over the film, which is nice. The CGI wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. I miss the little puppet mice from the original, but it grew on me as the movie went on. I've also noticed some people complain about changing the ethnicities of the characters, and honestly, if that's what you get mad over instead of real world issues, then you're directing your energy in all the wrong places. The New Orleans setting was cool and it worked very well -- it just added a nice spin so it wasn't 100% a copy of the original. It was refreshing and I think it worked well! Didn't take away from the story or the original themes at all.
Overall, I think if you're looking for a spooky movie to watch with the family for Halloween, or something that won't give you nightmares, then this is a cute movie to watch! I love witches, I love the book, and I thought this was a good production overall! I give it an 8 out of 10! :)
*Spoilers* They did change some characters and the end, which I didn't care for. I wish the kids turned back into humans and Bruno went with his family. I also wasn't sure how I felt about Daisy? Quite odd of them to try adding her in there -- could've been done more seamlessly. I also didn't like the weird Chris Rock mouse at the end -- still wish they had just turned back into humans and he grew up as an adult man. That's the only things I really disliked though!
