After having watched the first season in 2011, I knew that this show was far greater than I had anticipated & had to turn to its origins... A Song of Ice & Fire by George R.R. Martin. Having read the books prior to its following seasons I have to say; If you haven't read the books... YOU ARE LITERALLY SKIMMING THE SURFACE!!! There was nothing more frustrating than trying to have a discussion with someone so hyped up over GoT & yet... has only ever watched the show *facepalms*.
{Yes, the show is stunning! The quality most certainly exceeds that of the most expensive movie productions ever made. I don't believe they could have chosen better actors or actresses - they really bring the characters accurately to life. The score is by Ramin Djawadi... listen to the GoT soundtrack... words cannot... just fall in love.
Everyone & everything that has been put into the making of this show has successfully captured ASOIAF & has truly done GRRM justice.}
BUT... viewers have to realise that this show is simply an embellishment. It's the equivalent of admiring the exterior of a smartphone for the very first time... never having switched it on & finding out its capabilities.
A Song of Ice & Fire has an entire lore behind it, readers have discussed its theories for years; the show barely touches the surface of this & when they do... it'll go straight over any viewers head because they don't understand - most importantly - the ancestral history behind the characters. You can pull up a fanbased Wikipedia but it'll never come close to what you would have learned had you bothered to read the books.
