I appreciate that Disney is trying to make changes to the plot and characters to refresh the animated movie. Unfortunately, they completely took away Mulan’s character development. She was supposed to be an ordinary, untalented, even clumsy woman, who had to work hard to become a strong warrior. In this new version, Mulan was already a great fighter with little training. I thought the whole point is to demonstrate that ordinary women can do amazing things. But this new Mulan was not ordinary. Too bad we’re not all born with strong chi.
Also, it does not really touch on WHY Mulan would want to keep fighting for a country that rejects her. The animated version had that scene with the teddy bear lying in the destroyed village. They should have kept that scene. This version forgot to show the viewers that Mulan is also fighting for the lives of real people, not just some emperor.
