Neil Gaiman is a respected and heralded author, I respect that, but I don't think his book The Dangerous Alphabet is a good read for young children. Old men handing dollars looking to buy abducted little girls, and children nailed and chained to the walls in captivity are themes little ones should not have to process at such a young age. My specific complaint is that this book is available at public libraries in the young children section. And being an alphabet book, it seems targeted to young children. I don't promote shielding kids from the grittier and darker side of life, but 3, 4 and 5 year olds, who are learning to read and write can wait a little while longer before they learn that this stuff goes on the world. I read this book to 3 and 5 year olds and it hurt my heart.....I wish I had stopped reading after a few pages. I suppose there is a warning in the title.
