As an avid movie watcher and reader, I thought this movie was excellent, and I was going to give it four stars, but then changed it to five due to my respect for something unique, especially when so much out there is just recycled garbage. I'm finding it harder every day to actually find good movies, and I watch every genre and probably have seen thousands of movies over the decades. There are not many movies I would give five stars because what movie is "perfect?" Perfection is subjective.
I thought it was well cast, intriguing, allegorical and filled with symbolism, and not everyone is going to notice all the little details with one viewing. I loved the music and I often fall asleep to this film. I like that it wasn't loud, I love the narration, and that it wasn't another recycled story, which is all too common these days. It's difficult to place in any one genre.
It's so hard to find unique material these days, but I felt this was probably the best movie I've seen in years, but I'm a fan of the off-beat, dark, hidden gem movies. This is most certainly a hidden gem, and it may take more than one viewing to fully understand it, and it does leave some things up to your own interpretation and imagination, which I like. We don't always need every detail spelled out, but I know some people require everything explained to them.
In terms of violence that people complain about, well, nothing phases me anymore, esp after watching GOT. So, i personally don't have a problem with watching violent movies, but I understand how some people may find it difficult.
