I was incredibly moved reading this intelligent book. World War One was a slaughterhouse. Mr. Bird’s memoir is an informative record of the insanity that so many young men endured in 1916-18 (the years he was in France). He wrote about the death of so many of his fellow soldiers — an invaluable account to those soldiers’ families. Despite the fact that Mr. Bird was born in 1894, the sentiments expressed are very relatable and modern in their outlook and perspective. I am in awe of this man’s humanity and wisdom.
