Overall, this was a great game. It had the ambience and atmosphere that a horror game needs. But, MADiSON is not without flaw.
My critical review contains some minor spoilers.
1. The storyline left a lot to be desired, in some aspects.
a. For example, the game begins with Luca's dad yelling at him through the door. Luca's dad never comes back in the game, we only hear about him again during the time warp to when grandma was still alive (he is a child asleep in that scene). Instead of showing us the decay of the family during John's childhood, the game told us via the argument between grandma and grandpa. I think it would have been better if Luca discovered it in a journal or another non-verbal way.
b. Why was grandpa's house connected to the main house? It never made sense why the houses were connected. Did Luca and his dad take care of grandpa? Could the game have taken place in Luca's house instead? Luca is transported to all the areas where MADiSON wants him to go, so why is grandpa's house so important? Was there something special about grandpa's house, maybe because that is where grandma died?
c. What was the point of the gas chamber ghost in 1951 at St. Jupiter's? He had no prevalence in the storyline, save for being the father of the woman in confession (who was also pointless). That whole sub-plot could have been exactly the same without the ghost or the confessional woman.
d. Where did the Blue Knees book come from? Why did Blue Knees only go after grandma (and later show himself to grandpa)? The game made it seem like grandma bought the book for John or something, but it is so dark, I doubt that was the case. I wish there was more fleshed out details with some of the storyline, because that is what really makes a horror game.
2. Some of the mechanics of the game were cumbersome. Limiting your inventory to 8 items was a pain. This led to having to go back and forth between the lock boxes constantly to swap out items. Sometimes horror games should have a limited inventory, but MADiSON was not one of them, based on the number of puzzles etc. you need items to solve. A good chunk of time is spent just walking back and forth between lock boxes.
3. The jumpscares were good at first, but towards the end, they got annoying. When you are going back to the chair room, following who I can only assume is Madison, the constant loud noises and phasing in/out were not needed. When you are minutes away from completing the game, you don't need screams and jump scares every five seconds.
4. The voice acting was great, unlike some other indie games with text-to-speech voices. However; I think Luca had too many lines. His voice actor was awesome, but Luca talked way too much, especially whenever a new clue comes out and his skin burns or his eyes hurt etc. Again, show us- don't tell us.
Overall, a great scary game that is worth a play. If some of the mechanics were fixed and some of the storyline was better detailed, I would give this 5 stars.
