Brilliant writing, comedic and dramatic acting, romantic chemistry, improvisations, and dark humor. 10/10, would not change a thing (beyond wanting more episodes). I am not a pirate person or even really a tv romcom person, but I loved every moment of both seasons. There's a lot of fun absurdity, like anachronisms within otherwise historically accurate plots, people recovering quickly from serious stab wounds, etc. The romances always feel real though, and the characters' heartache, pining, etc. are never played for laughs. (I mean, the romantic leads are hilarious, and the show has some dark humor. But it never makes easy, meanspirited jokes at the expense of the actors or characters.) The show has a magical, almost Shakespearean ability to transition from tragedy to romance to slapstick comedy within moments, sometimes in the same scene. I love Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, but I've never seen them act as brilliantly or naturally as they do in this show. Beautiful, hilarious, heartbreaking, heartwarming. I recommend trying it, even if it doesn't sound like your kind of show at first. Oh, and the second season was shot in New Zealand, so you have that to look forward to if you like lovely shots of beaches, forests, cliffs, etc. that remind you of LotR.
