I lived through this and it was scary. I knew friends who were concerned and have experienced the confusion of who was infected and how you could catch AIDS. One of my best friends lost many to the disease and I also lost people. I think its a very real expression of the time because no one knew what it was. Yes it has been dramatised and tries to recreate the sense of loss and fear and I think it works. It can't be looked at as a criticism because that it how it was. People were dying and the gay community were promiscuous and I think it captures that perfectly. Its glamourised for TV but it shows the scary side of the disease and I think the government campaigns were effective. This is before the internet and social media there was no way to find out what AIDS was and it really shows that and because of that sadly many people still are losing their lives. AIDS is not over and you can still get it but there are some levels of cure.
