i haven’t even watched the movie yet but listening to the soundtrack as a lover of the musical, it hurt my ears. The whole joke of the musical is the dramatic intense score to back up a petty story about teenage drama. It works, but the new soundtrack uses weird lofi beats that do not work at all and are hard to listen to. On top of that this is not her fault but why on earth would they cast the main character of a musical (cady) to someone who can not sing. She wasn’t bad when she did sing but they clearly dodged having her do any sort of belting with a new less impactful song for “it roars” and having damian back janice in apex predator instead of cady. This can also be seen when aaron did virtually no singing throughout this show. I just personally don’t understand the reasoning behind that casting. I am also upset with the songs that they took out like who’s house is this which would’ve been easy to include with the vibe they were going for but they chose not to. I missed songs like where do you belong & stop & how meet the plastics was just regina like-?. Songs that make the musical what it is. When I first heard that this was coming out i was so exited and that excitement quickly turned into frustration when I saw they way they marketed this movie with almoast no mentions of it being a musical. I don’t agree with the people who are saying that they felt like it was good but didn’t like when the characters sung but i can not blame them. how were they spossed to know it was a musical when it wasn’t marketed as one. they didn’t include enough songs for it to be a full musical with characters breaking out into song often. In doing that they have disappointed all the musical lovers who are seeing the show and also disappointed people who mistook this for a normal movie. Pick a side. I also noticed an akward shift with less belting in the soundtrack to more dainty “pop like” head voice. For example in “what’s wrong with me” when gretchen goes “ what’s wrong with me what can I do? What’s wrong with me? Could it be you” in the musical there is a nice belty crescendo at that part followed by a quiet “it’s probably me” and in the new version there was none of that and it didn’t not create the same effect of how akward and insecure gretchen is. So not only does the new soundtrack sound bad but it also damages the story line and misses out on great gags from the original soundtrack. I am not going to compare this movie to the original movie because i know they were not trying to go for the same exact thing as that but I feel like they forgot what made the musical good and what made the original movie good and have severely disappointed.
