Mild spoilers ahead I saw this in Thailand, oddly it opened on the 16th here, way before the premier or embargo. The movie, as I’m sure you may or may not have gathered it’s set sometime after the events of Revolutions, Neo and Trinity are very much alive and back in the matrix, this is where the film treads some old ground with a sprinkling of some new Bugs, a captain of a ship not dissimilar to the one Morpheus was captain of is sure Neo isn’t dead, and is and has been on the hunt for him for some time, the story from here is where things change pace. The movie becomes more about a rescue mission within the matrix & the real world for trinity and what that means for the Matrix, Neo & Trinity. The why she needs to be rescued? go and watch to find out. My thoughts on the movie, a little overlong, action a tad too many tight shots and shaky cam for me, I get the visceral appeal but the matrix had an aesthetic I was expecting and it didn’t totally deliver on that. The story was perfectly serviceable, enjoyable even, jumping back in to a world with those characters was always going to invoke a level of nostalgia. It was also not afraid to poke fun at itself in moments. the film is very “meta” but I didn’t find it overly “woke” or found it attempting hammer too much of a message down my throat, although there is definitely some symbolism in there. it left me a tiny bit cold but ultimately satisfied. B- from me.
