This is one of the first Disney movies to genuinely interest me in a long time. It completely breaks the boring formula that they've fallen into. In a sea of identical plots churned out year after year, this is a breath of fresh air. If only Disney had actually tried to market it, this could have been enormous.
The environment, the creatures, the characters, all of it is breathtakingly vibrant and creative. Even the obligatory "marketable sidekick" character is actually likeable, important to the plot, and doesn't feel like it was shoehorned in. The messages behind it are meaningful, and relatable to all ages.
Its only downfall is that we live in a world full of people who would much rather foam at the mouth with hatred over any reminder that people different to themselves exist, than to enjoy a beautiful piece of art and storytelling.
Ps: The most physical interaction the two gay characters have is that they kinda side hug at the end. I promise you, your kids aren't going to explode from being made vaguely aware that gay people exist.
