I really enjoyed Another Life, despite a few cognitive dissonances that felt more about the editing process than anything.
While not quite "unqualified/disaster" porn, there's something fairly appropriate with the crew that's not really up to scratch being sent out on a mission. As much as it can seem like lazy writing to some (which I'm definitely reading from reviews online), it's also very easy to see the wrong people making the poor choices that lead to a crew like this - I've known some spectacularly inept individuals being in positions of power and expertise, and it does indeed end poorly.
There's some great tropes/themes in AL, and while some of them are a bit bizarrely presented I just think it's a different perspective, and sci-fi is fun for these very reasons.
As for the reviews that cry about the "political correctness" of the series, wow, head in the sand much? Art is always political, it always has been and always will be, and to be very honest this series is far, far less political than others. Read a book, crikey.
It's good scifi. It's entertaining to watch. I want to see more of it, and where the story goes.
