The author and I were born in the same month and in the same year. My community was incredibly similar to hers and given my own experience, I absolutely believed everything she described about her upbringing. Given the far range of impact the evangelical community had on the lives of those who lived it, I also believe this was an important story (and collection of stories) to tell. I also feel a great deal of sympathy both for the author and her greater family. While I believe these stories must be told for the greater good of our society, I can only imagine the terrible cost to family relationships by so publicly airing such an intimate story. Because of this, I salute the author - I don't believe I could have been as brave.
