I didn’t understand the issues Liam Hemsworth’s character was having with his young girlfriend. It seemed as though he was jealous of her success and used any excuse to get into a romantic relationship with Laura Dern’s character. If his character is threatened by his girlfriend’s recent success he would really be threatened by an older woman who was much more successful. Which would have him enduring more literary retreats he hate so much.
His girlfriend tried to include him in her plans but he refused her often, just because he didn’t read some of the literature the group discussed or he was angry at her about a comment she or someone else made. It was like the writer of movie tried to make him seem stupid but if he was a successful businessman, he was not ignorant to literature. Especially “Great Expectations” because you have to read that book in high school. The issues he was having with his young girlfriend, he would have the same issues except he now has an older woman, who is more set in her ways. I think the writer wrote this story in one night. The movie would have been better if the writer made Liam’s character a writer and they both fell in love at a retreat due to their same interests. Instead of trying to create issues between characters that wasn’t there. Because if being around authors of books made him that uncomfortable to the point it would ruin his relationship with his girlfriend, he would not have went to the retreat or he would have lied about a business emergency and left (since there wasn’t any cell service at an expensive retreat anyway) yeah right. He definitely would not have started a new relationship with another author, if smart, successful women made him angry and uncomfortable. He acted nasty to his girlfriend who wanted to be with him, but he tried to convince an older woman that complained throughout the movie to be with him. (Which he was only there to be with his girlfriend.) Poor storyline. I was more interested in Diana Silvers storyline than Liam and Laura’s. (I didn’t like the “Lily” character but she did have more life than the lead characters). It was like everyone wanted to be the good guy and it really wasn’t any character you was rooting for.
