This “national emergency text” on 10/4/23 reminded me of this novel. What struck me as fascinating about this novel is how well I knew the characters in only a few pages. Only great writers can do that. It works very well in the short story format (at which he also excels). I measure a writer by how much I enjoy reading his work. So by that metric, he is far and away my favorite of all time.

This is really dark, yet incredibly hopeful and uplifting. I can’t remember the last time I read a John Connolly book and didn’t cry.
