This album should at least be in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 200 albums because this is miles better than himself and back to front: this is peak Gilbert O’Sullivan. Production on this album is crisp, all the instruments are mixed perfectly, whether it’s the clavinet, electric guitars, Fender Rhodes, punchy bass, dry drums, perfect grand pianos and even the synth setting in the late Hammond organ! The only thing that could make this album better is if it included the outtakes in the deluxe edition. I love this man, Raymond Edward O’Sullivan, and all that success he talks about wanting so badly — one day Gilbert, I’ll make people recognize you.
I’m A Writer Not a Fighter: 10/10 great opener, not even double tracked!
Friend Of Mine: 8/10 it throws many listeners off immediately but the bridge hooks me back in!!
They’ve Only themselves To Blame: 10/10 peak orchestration from Johnnie Spence!!
Who knows Perhaps Maybe: 6/10 by far the weakest song but it packs a punch!
Where Peaceful Waters Flow: 7/10 wish he did more Soul!!
Ooh Baby: 11/10 this guys somehow made the catchiest song with the shitiest lyrics. Love it!!
I’ve Never Loves You as Much as I loved you Today: 6/10 trumpets carry this tune
Not In A Million Years: 15/10 this song saves the b-side of the record! Best lyrics of the album
If You Love Me Like You Love Me: 10/10!!! Unmistakeable intro and a song worth of tears!
Get Down: 6.8/10 it’s ok, it lacks some of the production boost the other songs had on the album, probably as it was the first to be recorded for it and they were just figuring out the formula!
The thing that saves this album is there is no Intro or outro song and his voice turned into more or less British as opposed to Irish for the First album, North English for the second and now just a good old middle of the Uk accent for this one.
One day Ray, I’ll make the world appreciate your music. Rock on!
