Summary and key points of my review 1. Why did The First Order have so much power and how come the Republic didn't do much? It basically felt like the Empire didn't die but instead they changed their name to The First Order. And then there is the Resistance. They aren't really resisting anything to be honest. Also, how did The First Order get all of the materials and time to build a planet-sized Death Star anyway without the Republic knowing or doing anything? There is a lot of information missing between Episode VI and Episode VII. 2. The old man at the start only gets about 5 minutes of screen time before dying and has barely any backstory apart from knowing the Skywalkers and for some reason having a piece to the map to Luke. I can't even remember his name. A bit of an unnecessary character. 3. Was it really necessary to introduce lots of new planets and not use any previous planets at all? I don't remember Jakku, Takodana or D'Qar in Episode VIII or Episode IX so they aren't used again. 4. I think if I was going into hiding and didn't want to be found, I wouldn't create a map to find me. I guess Luke just thought otherwise. 5. How come the Resistance had a map of Starkiller Base? I don't remember Finn having one of those and the Resistance definitely didn't steal one either. 6. How did Rey know how to use the force without any training at all? She did try the mind trick a few times before it worked but still. 7. It seems like a bit of an excuse to bring back Anakin's lightsaber that Maz just found it or something on Bespin. It would have been funny if she found Luke's hand though. And where did Maz even come from? 8. Kylo Ren didn't need his mask. Its only purpose was intimidation. They also tried to make him really powerful at the start but then he loses to an ex-stormtrooper and a scavenger with a lightsaber. 9. There isn't really anything political in this movie and it just feels like pointless action at times. 10. Poe's survival is cheap. 11. The humour isn't right. 12. It feels like the director and writer didn't know much about Star Wars. 13. The plot is predictable at times due to the movie basically being A New Hope remake. Not a very original movie. 14. That electric lightsaber thing is weird. 15. You ruined most of the original characters' personalities. 16. Starkiller Base blows up and is pretty much gone when the Resistance fleet flies out of the explosion. They all should have died along with Kylo Ren, General Hux and Captain Phasma. I would give the movie 5 stars if that happened. 17. Why didn't Finn become a Jedi? He was all set up. He is even force sensitive. Rey could have brought him along. There are some other small things that are wrong too but oh well. The acting is half decent I guess but the lines are cringy, corny and cheesy. I hate to believe that this movie is cannon but at least it has a good soundtrack.
