After reading some of the reviews, I can’t help but wonder what the critics expected from an Adam Sandler movie. I mean that is his genre. I will admit that it was not the most interesting movie but I still found some laughs in it.
Some critics went as far as to talk about the racism in the movie. And yes, I could see that it could be construed that way. However, this is a comedy. It is not meant to insult anyone.
At a comedy venue, ppl don’t accuse the comedian very often if being racist in spite of their sometimes uncouth jokes. Why? Because it is intended to be funny and usually no ethnicity is spared from the jokes.
Another point a critic made was that the characters should not have been picked by Sandler and that they were all his friends or something to that extent. We’ll that is just how it is. I believe Sandler is akin to Quentin Tarantino in that he likes to use the same faces in his movie. Steve Bushemi, Harvey Keital, Rob Schneider etc etc.
Maybe it a comfort for him to work with ppl he likes, respects and enjoys. It is his movie after all. QT does it all the time even with many of the same characters in this movie.
If you want to watch a non-comedy by or with Adam Sandler, try “Uncut Gems”. I found it to be an interesting 🍿 movie. Albeit, I had specific links to it in that I used to enjoy gambling like a madman as the main character, Sandler, did in the movie.
I cannot convey enough how many times I have watched movies with subpar reviews that actually end up being surprisingly worth watching and even good. I would caution against reading into reviews as if the reviewers are the know it all, including my own.
That said, this movie was far from my favorite Sandler movie. I am a sucker for slapstick comedy like “Airplane” for example.
Cheers.
