Both the directing and editing sucked. The former added no life to what were dull performances of the leads. The only interesting characters seemed to be coming from the small roles, but if they were given bigger parts, I am sure you wouldn’t like them any more than any of the lead roles. The director seemingly knows nothing about human emotion, leaving any display of that to the small roles. As for the latter, it sucked the joy out of the film and made sure that anything interesting or philosophical was cut down to the bones.
Also, what controversy? Certainly there was no deep discussion of the technology beyond the obvious. Ultimately, I typical like movies like this—no action, all talk with silences, and muted performances—but this somehow took the worst of each in a less than the sum of their parts manner.
The only interesting thing to come out of this movie might be the post-viewing conversations, but at least with an art film, you would have something meaty to chew on. It is all gristle here.
