Honestly this movie was trash. First of all, -to all my fellow horror fans- this is not a horror movie. Nothing horrific really happens at any point in the movie at all. We barely even get to see the characters use their powers, so I wouldn’t really call it a supernatural movie either. The movie doesn’t really go into character depth at all, so you don’t really care for the characters all that much. The acting was (for the most part) mediocre. Throughout the whole movie I thought that the main focus was going to be on the fight scene, because it seemed like there wasn’t much thought put into the plot. Of course, I was wrong; we don’t really get to see the characters use their powers in the fight scene, we just see them get thrown around by the “monster”. What angered me the most about the fight scene was that I knew that some of the characters had the potential to fight, but they lost really easily. It made me feel like the characters weren’t fighting for their lives (in other words it was sloppily done). Another thing I want to point out is the supposed “diversity” that they decided to throw in there - like how the two main characters were lesbians. There were no black people, there were racist comments thrown around (about Native Americans), and of course the “bitchy” character just had to be blond, angry, and Russian. Again the acting was pretty bad and it was one of the reasons why I hated the main character. The last thing about this movie was the title. It really wasn’t fitting for the movie seeing as there is nothing “new” about them. When I was watching it I felt as if I had seen it all before. They are literally going through the same things all of the other mutants did, so what makes them so special? The fact that that they are trying to break out (which, for half the movie they weren’t even trying to do)? Again, there was nothing new or special about these mutants. They aren’t trying to save anyone and they aren’t even trying to break out for most of the movie. All we get for most of it is just sloppy “character depth”. I suggest you watch this movie at home than waste your money at the theaters. By the way only one character was good and that was Charlie Heaton (I also was waiting for the main character to get slapped).
