As a storm fanatic who has seen the original movie hundreds of times throughout a lifetime, I was so deeply disappointed and I didn’t want to be. For unneeded context, I bought tickets for this movie the moment they were available and put it on my calendar, so you know, a new tornado movie is a big event in my home. I knew this would not be like the original and yet, I still walked out feeling so disappointed.
The subtle references to Twister (1996) throughout were very sweet and the array of new characters was very dynamic and charming in places. The science was very accurate…to a point. Throwing things like CAPE and inflow into dialogue and being correct is what makes this movie good. The tornado CGI, I thought, was very good. The guy from Storm Par(?) looking like Jonas from the original make me smile. And more. It’s the essence of the movie I enjoyed, but the scenes that played out before me made me question if I liked it.
The opinion of the ending can change from review to review, but personally, I was a little caught off guard. I didn’t expect it was the final scenes until it happened. That is my biggest criticism; if you compare it to the original formula of movie making, for example, going from level of intensity of tornadoes to end with the biggest and baddest at the end, you watch the movie with anticipation of whats to come. Twisters (2024) being an entire separate movie on it’s own, feels like a mess.
Personal Opinion: I had hoped like a silly Twister fan that when Kate drove home after her experiences and in the mysterious shadows of night, Helen Hunt would bring comfort. Helen can 100% correct me if I’m wrong, but they never asked her to take part in this movie. WHY? Literally, why?
Furthermore, I will be the only one on this ship and I’m totally fine with that, but WHY couldn’t we have had a kiss at the end to solidify the romance the movie was so heavily involved with? It feels like I ordered a burger with fries, and they left me without fries…and I really wanted the fries, but I can still enjoy the burger on it’s own. Begrudgingly.
You can be scientifically accurate, have a blooming romance that comes to completion, respect the original and have action all in one movie and it can still be good, but why not this one?
There’s just too many decisions that could have been made differently to make me enjoy this movie more and those decisions will never be made. And that’s what disappoints me.
Will you agree with me? Maybe, maybe not.
Should you go to this movie to enjoy it on your own? Oh, heck yes.
Overall, I feel like this movie sequel culture we are in right now caught hold of a beloved movie, had the formula to make it excellent and rewatchable, but just didn’t care.
Maybe my opinion will change with time…but for now, I remain dissatisfied but also feel like I may have expected too much.
3 out of 5.
