As a huge fan of Deadspace, I had high hopes. Visually, The Callisto Protocol is beautiful. Mechanically, not so much. Most of the combat faced in the game is more melee driven. With close quarters and in your face fights, the dodging mechanic works. But only with one or 2 enemies. Once you’re swarmed, which happens, the dodging ability really breaks down. There is no fast movement to avoid strikes other than moving your head left or right. There is no roll feature or really any kind of jump feature either. At a certain point in the game, the combat just completely shifts from melee driven, to just complete shoot, shoot some more, shoot later, and hope you don’t get hit from behind because you can’t dodge it. Then you better hope you can find more ammo that you just pissed away. Also, the health injector, I get what they were trying to do. To really make you think when and where to use it because it takes so long to do, but man not being able to add health while moving was a real pain. In later chapters it also felt kind of repetitive. Opening crates (lockers/loot crates) and having the same little slug thing jump out in literally almost every crate toward the end just felt lazy and the jump factor really went out the window after the first couple times. Then it was just annoying. There was also some serious predicable moments i.e. anytime you met up with Elias or Dani, it literally got to the point to where I was saying to myself, hmm. Wonder what floor panel or bridge is going to collapse so we’ll get separated again and I’ll have to take the long way. 2 seconds later. I’m falling off another damn walk way. Happened way to much and was way to predictable. I may sound like I hated the game, I did not. It just felt like a great start to something that could and I’m sure will be more considering they left the entire ending wide open for a sequel.
