The movie certainly made me feel a bit uncomfortable at times. Of course, it depicts real life scenario's. The characters struggle with religion, sexuality, eating disorders, depression, abandonment, loss of family, and so much more. Warning, there will be spoilers in my review.
The acting was great, as others have expressed. Liz and Mary were my favorite characters. Their emotions were based very much in reality, and you could see that they cared a lot for Charlie. On the other hand, I truly hated the way Charlie and Ellie behaved. Charlie excused horrible behavior from Ellie. What ruined it for me especially was how Charlie left ALL of his money for Ellie and not a cent for Liz or Mary. The only person who was actually there for him after the loss of his boyfriend, Liz, and Mary who he betrayed and left to raise Ellie alone.
Additionally, I felt that Sadie Sinks role as Ellie was overdone. She is a great actor, but the lines given to her were way too much. It also seems like the writers wanted us to hate Ellie, only to end the movie with her looking like the ultimate victim. Yes, she was abandoned by Charlie but that is no excuse to have terrorized everyone else in her life. She does not seem to realize/care that her mom felt the loss of Charlie too.
The ending was pretty unsatisfying, even down to the way they decided to show when he actually passed away. It seemed like there was not enough time made to produce a better ending. So while it is overall very impactful, the ending may leave you disappointed.
