Both the most haunting opening scene and also the most haunting closing scene of any movie I’ve seen. I went to see it in the cinema today, April 2023, to see whether it had lost its power or relevance in the last fifty years – I saw it when it first came out in 1972 – and it absolutely has not. Just an extraordinary movie.
