Pretentious tosh. From the first appearance of the "surprise" cardinal it was obvious who would be elected. The over-portentious soundtrack didn't mask the lack of tension or suspense in the script. Maintaining a doleful expression is not great acting. I suppose we ought to be glad a lot of order actors got employment.

The first time I have read an International Booker short-listed novel and wondered why it was there. Still it's a breezy, bowling - along yarn which stuffs everything in without convincing with the symbolism. Size isn't everything.
