I am a straight white guy and I kind of like this game. Games like Bioshock and Final Fantasy have been pushing forward thinking, liberal politics for years. If those games came out for the first time today, the red hat cultists would be calling them woke as well. Final Fantasy 7 would be called woke if it came out for the first time today because of its environmentalism and anti-capitalism storyline and the fact that it has a female character that can physically fight and a playable black guy. All of these things would make it "woke" by today's standards. And the Bioshock franchise was never shy about its messaging. In fact it's very on the nose.
So trust me when I say that the downfalls of this game are not that it has playable characters that are black or female nor is it because it has a political message. Those things are completely fine in gaming. And the same people complaining about it now are the ones that ignored it in the past. Or they were just too naive to know any better back then.
The only problem with this game is the gameplay. After a while it gets kind of boring and repetitive. The story has some intriguing moments. There's a part where you go into an underground school and it gets a little spooky for a while and there's a genuine mystery there that was kind of intriguing but the way that most of the story is executed is just dull and boring.
But anyone claiming that this game is a failure because of Dei is an idiot. The discussion is a lot more nuanced than that. This game has both pros and cons but you have to be unbiased to see that.
It's not a bad game because it has black characters or female characters or a political message. It's a mediocre game because it has boring repetitive gameplay.
