I haven’t read the books. The show presents scientists as whimsical and easily swayed by unexpected research results. They are more weak minded than the police detective. And scientists would never think of hallucinations? Oh that’s weird, suddenly coming on like that. It also presents these powerful groups: the scientific community and the government community as not communicating at all. There’s this paranoia to interact with someone you’re not familiar with. In my limited personal experience people are far smarter and more apt to network in an open manner. To seek input and consensus. If these premises are in the books, then the underlying assumptions are ridiculous and undermine everything else. Now it’s fiction without the science. Or a story without adequate logical structure.

The writers have gutted this story. The characters don’t talk as much as they need to. The old troupe of building tension by not talking. The real main character had no trouble talking. And he was a writer. It moves along so slowly. Not so in the books. They are leaving out all the farmer-vet interactions. The story is half about Herriots various clients and their animals. There are always many cases each week. In some episodes he seems to only work with one farmer the whole week. Put some life back into it! I highly recommend the first series and the books.

I’m having mixed reactions to this show. There’s some very good things. But the Kate character is so ridiculous. She’s smart? But the dumbest most clueless person. And the endless apologizing and caretaking. She seems to have no insight. I’m tired of watching dim female characters. I don’t think there are as many of them as are portrayed by Hollywood. Women have a lot of wisdom. When she walked out of her daughter’s recital, because she was emotional, was the absolute low point. It takes a real selfish, dimwit to walk out while your child is performing. Maybe this is a big farce comedy?

I’m going to say I hope they continue this series. I laughed at some of the other low reviews because there is some poor writing here. But ...... the overall plot is quite good. The story line with the aliens should unfold. I’d like to see it continue. But again please change course with the main characters! So childish. How can so many self centered, immature people man the one ship setting out from earth? Apparently someone thinks we need melodrama to stick with a show. Power hungry leaders with no self discipline? Impulsive, whiny, loud mouths with no loyalty? Crew members who don’t understand space travel? Come on! All this stuff was annoying. Another change needed: beef up the science! Too many glaring holes. Starting with the obvious lack of scientific knowledge of half the crew. This show has potential. Don’t throw it away.

Teen drama played by adults. It could be a good story but the writer/director decided the characters should be impulsive, lack emotional control and be filled with poorly thought through logic. They storm around, form cliques, gossip while doing “important” research, go from hot to cold. All these adults acting like they’re hormonal teens. A police officer said, “people are deeply bored here.” Haha. So teen perspective.
