I'm about half way through Verity, and as a new Mom I had to put this book down. Huge spoilers ahead but honestly, I don't care too much about spoiling the horrible content that Colleen Hoover tries to sell as romantic.
First off, the main character is so basic it hurts. There is nothing exciting about her in any regard....and my God, she hates pizza. Who the hell hates pizza!? (See pg 76 of book).
Secondly, Verity has written an 'autobiography' that the main character discovers that legit is just soft core porn. Not sure if that could be classified as an autobiography...Colleen. Also, within the autobiography there is enough incriminating information to put this woman into jail for life, and the protagonist just keeps it to herself without bringing anything forward because she has a hard on for Verity's husband.
Where I had to put the book down, is when the character of Verity writes in her 'autobiography' that she tries to suffocate one of her newborn daughters because they are consuming too much of her beloved husband's time and energy. She literally wants to KILL her child, because her husband is being an attentive father and Verity is not getting laid as often. It was insane....disgusting and made me feel so disturbed that Colleen could write a character like this.
What makes me even more disturbed is how popular and highly recommended Hoovers content seems to be. The caliber of writing is weak, the messages being portrayed are disgusting and the romance is over sexualized and feels completely forced and out of place. I am all for a good thriller or romance, but clearly Colleen Hoover has a completely flawed understanding of both.
I do not recommend, nor will I be attempting any of her other novels after this trainwreck of a first experience.
