This creatively imagined story by H.George Wells ended up in 1960 being made into a movie starring Australian born actor Rod Taylor.
For me at the age of 16, it was revelation of the escapism from reality that I was myself imagining and trying to enact following a hellish abuse ridden childhood in UK Childrens Homes run by The Church of England Childrens Society(now The Childrens Society). I cannot but express enormous gratitude for the author's ability to imagine Time as being a fourth dimension to escape into, with bodily movement in six directions being the reason for it being presumed to represent the only possible reality of there being but three dimensions.
This story and the movie of it has haunted me throughout my life because of the impact it had upon my own imagination.
Imagine for a moment if time travel were indeed possible....it would mean that partaking in it one could witness one's death then revert back to one's birth and be able to eye witness once again, everything one had experienced in their whole of life.
I am watching the movie on DVD as I write this. There is Rod Taylor as a young actor going about establishing himself as a respected icon in the movie world. He died some years ago now. I wonder, did he get to ride on his Time Machine in what some like to imagine as being "The After Life"? Human imagination. The one difference that sets us apart from all other creatures and enables us to share things never before dreamed of and to make them reality. Thanks HG....without you Time Travel within one's imagination would never have been demonstrated to be a possible reality. Time and Tide wait for no man!
The Time Machine is my favourite story and the movie my favourite work of fiction created from non-fiction. A masterpiece of human imagination ! Everyone should get to know the story....it will waken their imagination to new heights !
