After Life (by Ricky Gervais). I love this powerfully written series. It is an incredibly brilliant story! I cannot praise the writer and actors of this singular series enough. It is easy to absolutely fall in love with the main character Tony. The depth of his grief in losing his beloved wife is inspiring and leaves you reflecting on what really matters in this transitory life. I was moved by Tony's dog giving him purpose at important moments when he literally needed a reason to go on. The transparent real life way in which the long goodbye of dementia is portrayed, through Tony's father in the elderly care home, honors the experience of so many of us who have lost a loved one with this same heartbreak. It is also significant to me that Tony represents those among us who do not just "get over" grief. There is a chasm in our souls we live with. We love that person we lost as long as life endures. The ache in our heart from missing them becomes such a part of who we are. This entire series is a potent testament to real life experiences. It is beautiful how in spite of his pain Tony is able to carry the love of his wife in such a way into the world that he brings joy and hope to others through his grief journey. I also laughed out loud at many hilarious moments and deeply appreciate the value of the great sarcasm which remains consistent through each episode. The ending is just right, it gives insight into making moments count because we are all here only a short time, and it gives the possible hope of being spiritually reunited with loved ones in the After Life.
