I will say that I did enjoy Origami King, I believe it's better than the last two entries, but still far below the first three. The world is all connected, making it seem more real and enjoyable to explore. There is a uniqueness to each area sort of, which is something worth appreciating. The characters are sadly not as unique, most are still toads or old Mario enemies. However, you can still see the developers trying to deliver on some kind of personality through dialogue.
The combat system is a little conflicted, and it can be disputed whether it is good or bad. It's a neat idea, solving a little puzzle to gain the advantage over a wave of enemies. There is satisfaction in lining the enemies up correctly, but that's not always the case. Sometimes the puzzles can be too difficult, which only drags fights on longer. At one point, the battles just feel like a nuisance to your progress, with not much reward besides coins. Coins are utilized more in this game, which is why you earn a lot from battles, but you can gain so much of them in the late game that there's barely any incentive to battle at that point.
Boss Battles have their own issues too. If you don't perform the specific right actions during your turn, you honestly just waste time. Even the smallest mistake can drag a fight longer than it needs to.
Overall, it's an ok game that has it's great pros like the music and hilarious dialogue. But it also gets weighed down a lot by its cons, such as the combat system and lack of uniqueness in characters.
Throughout the game, you can sense that something is holding it back from becoming an unforgettable experience. Problems arise from the philosophy the devs have, to do something new just for the sake of it being new. They rather do something new instead of what used to work. It's sad to see what Paper Mario has become, despite not even played the first two games.
