Elite: Dangerous is the 4th game in the Elite series which began on the BBC Model B computer in 1984. It is awesome.
With a learning curve that, sadly, puts of many casual gamers and a sandbox style which relies on the player to forge their own narrative, the game seems intimidating to some.
The game boasts the most incredible visual rendering of space, the best sound design of any space game and the most richly fleshed out lore that you can imagine.
Due for a second DLC at the end of 2020, Elite: Dangerous is also fully VR compatible. It is arguably the best of the AAA titles available in VR, but definitely the best space sim on the market currently.
Available on PC, PS and XBOX, the game is often on sale for around £12 for the deluxe edition, at that price it is absolutely a no brainer. Even at full price as I paid, it is an incredibly deep and complex game, in which I currently have over 5000 hours logged.
I'd recommend it to anybody with a love of flight sims, space or exploration as the 1:1 rendering of our galaxy includes all of the known stellar bodies and planets as well as alien races and artefacts.
The combat system in E: D is well fleshed out and allows for multiplayer or solo play with Private Groups for those that want to play cooperatively with friends, without gankers and human combatives getting in the way.
Something for everybody with a few weeks to burn :)
