I saw the trailer for this, and i thought it looked pretty promising.
However, i am very skeptical when it comes to feminist-based movies because of how they portray the ideology and the people involved with it. All of the supporting characters were not fleshed out AT ALL, and this movie just screams virtue signaling. These supporting characters were almost all people of color, and seemed to be there just for brownie points, only for the sole purpose to support the main character. It’s clear they were just there so they wouldn’t get bashed on for not being “diverse enough”. if you’re going to have people of color as supporting or main characters, don’t put them in just for the sake of putting them in. Put them in as fleshed out characters that actually contribute to the plot.
Towards the end, there is an act of affection between two of the girl supporting characters. Since these characters aren’t fleshed out and we know NOTHING about them other than their very vague backgrounds, it comes off as virtue signaling. These are two characters who never had any sort of interaction that was focused on, and never showed any signs of affection earlier on.
Also, i never understood the whole “feminist rant” scene at the dinner table. it puts actual feminists in a bad light, and it doesn’t make it better that Vivian blames her mom for acting the way she does.
I feel like if this was from the point of view of Lucy instead of Vivian, since Lucy was the one who was shown experiencing harassment and micro aggressions, it would be a lot more interesting. this would be because the audience would better understand WHY the girls are so angry and rioting.
I feel this movie focuses on the “riot grrrrl” aesthetic more than the actual issue.
